Hi,

Driving home from work today I noticed that some of lights in Black rock have been changed from wither LPS or semi-cut-off HPS to a much better design. Perhaps these were done some time ago, but I only noticed today.

In the image you can see a closeup of the new lights and some of the older semi-cut off lights in the bottom.

Although these are still not full cut off flat glass, they are a very substantial improvement on what was there before.

These lights come under the responsibility of Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Co. Co., a body that has yet to even acknowledge getting a letter from me despite sending in formal submissions. Though perhaps they read them afterall!

I wonder if councils around the country are starting to use these lights to replace the LPS lights on their streets?

Cheers,
~Al

Interesting image Albert. It looks like an extremely good semi-cutoff fitting but not quite a full cutoff.
I wonder who makes them :?:

Dont know who makes those particular ones, but they are readily available on the market from for example Urbis Lighting www.urbislighting.com/products.php3?type=1&light=Yes

Several of those lamps, for example the ZX's can be used with the typical semi cut off bowl as well, as flat glass.

Urbis have an interesting Knowledge base section on their website also, which is interesting to see a manufacturers point of view.

Hi Albert,
Maybe the bad lights were replaced when they failed.
So, if the remainder of the lights were to suddenly fail or end their usefull lives somehow, then you'd end up with only good lights in the area

I wonder if it had anything to do with the requisition I mentioned in this letter to a "dark sky friendly" lighting company in July 2002:

Subject: Supply and Delivery of Dublin Public Lighting
To: cxxxxx*xxxx.com

Dear Mr. xxxx,
An advertisement in today's Irish Times indicated that Dublin is looking for suppliers of public lighting. I thought of your company. Here is the information:

www.dublincity.ie/tenders/020703.htm

As an amateur astronomer, I applaud the fact that xxxx promotes efficient, well directed dark-sky friendly lighting. Dublin has much to learn in this area. I have also never seen a place where more lights are glaring 24 hours a day, even during summer solstice when we get nearly 20 hours of daylight! Ireland signed on to the Kyoto energy protocol, but the way things are going they will probably miss their target by at least 30% unless they find a way to be more efficient. I hope you can help.

Note:I removed mention of the company, because a majority of their advertised lights don't look very dark sky friendly. I shudder to think of the possiblity that Ireland will adopt the tacky U.S. fad of floodlighting houses and trees and the U.S. style hyper bright petrol station lights (get a tan while you fill up!)
