Stories/images of light pollutio in Ireland

Hi,

I'm looking for source material (by tomorrow morning!) to help someone out with a presentation.

If anyone has any light pollution stories (successes, futile frustrating failures that nearly ended in shotguns at dusk etc.) please send them on by morning.

I live outside Bray, in North Co. Wicklow / Sth. Dublin and was once surrounded by farmland on all sides with a small glen to my south. The glen was used in the past by Roadstone to extract sand and gravel. About ten years ago the quarry site was bought by Noble’s Waste Management who largely filled in the glen with unsorted waste and developed it into a waste transfer station (not pleasant neighbours at all!) and erected large sheds and copious floodlighting. The night sky all but vanished over night.

Greenstar now own the facility (at Fassaroe, Bray – EPA license 53/2 and 53/3-pending) and are expanding the site massively. In the last couple of years they have erected more giant sheds, all of which are flood-lit on the outside. None of the lights point downwards. Indeed, there are large pools of shadow directly beneath each floodlight! Repeated requests to Greenstar and complaints to the EPA and Wicklow Co. Co. along with several meetings with Greenstar (at their request) have resulted in absolutely no corrective action being taken – despite the ‘deeply concerned’ assurances by their management team. Here is one of many photos of part of the site taken from the side of my house. It only shows half of the lighting problem The floodlights even penetrate my bedroom blinds and curtains at night. It’s enough to make your blood boil!

If you’re rounding up a team with baseball bats and balaclavas then count me in!

How they get away with this is shocking!! The brown paper envelope business in Ireland is alive and well. Keep up the good fight, people power is the only answer.

Is it possible to plant some high density evergreen trees in your garden blocking this view? I have over the last few months - wiat until they are big!! They're about 6ft high when I bought them, and have had to plant them strtegically in my backgarden because of my next door neighboure relentless quest to clear everything within a 50metre radius :x

Also - I'm going to build a light shield as shown here - give it some serious thought - cheap and effective!! PVC frame, and you can build it to really as high as you like - I'm going to build an 8ft tall one, about 6ft wide
