Half Moon observation June 5th was created by flt158
Hi everyone. Did any of you dust down your scopes last Thursday night (June 5th) and have a look at the Moon? It was exactly half phase. I observed it for a full 1 hour 15 minutes. This is what I saw:
I used magnifications 40X, 112X, 140X and 167X. I started up in the north and saw craters Aristotele, Eudoxus, Calippus, Cassini, Theaetetus, Aristillus, Autolycus, Spurr, Aratus, Santo Dumont, Yangel, Ukert and Triesnecker.
But what I thought particularly stunning was all the cracks or rilles, as we call them. 4 in all!!.
They were Rima Fresnel, Rima Bradley, Rima Triesnecker and Rima Hyginus. They were all very close to the terminator straight down the centre. Antonin Rukl's book "Atlas of the Moon" is a must for all lunar observers.
Perhaps someone took an image. It has been a few weeks since I did any observing, and the sky was not dark even at midnight.
I had a look at Mars, Porrima, Izar, RV Bootis and Cor Caroli too.
Thank you for reading,
Aubrey.

Nice one Aubrey; Wednesday was clearer for me but I was concentrating on the elusive southerly clusters including globs M4 and 80 and also M19 in Ophiuchus. In addition got a nice view of Comet K1 Panstarrs in the Great Bear but probably the highlight of the whole night was the beautiful double 95 Herculis, it's my new favourite I think

Hi, Fermidox. I wasn't free on Wednesday night. But I have observed M4 and M80 just 1 year ago in 2013 -both impressed me.
But it has been some years since I hunted down 95 Herculis. It is a good double alright. Congratulations on sighting Panstarrs.
I thought Saturday night was going to be clear. But it turned hazy at 9 o'clock. And I went to bed early.
Aubrey.
