I may have seen the same object. It was 00.10 hrs when I saw a slowly moving object in the west at about 65 degrees altitude. It started to increase in brightness slowly from 3.0 mag over a period of 5 seconds to a maximum magnitude of -5.5. It was at its maximum for about 1.5 secs. It then faded slowly within about 7 seconds to mag +3.0. It was travelling from SE to NW. The distance covered from start to finish was about 3.5 degrees.
I thought it was an iridium flare. In fact it was the brightest one I have ever seen. I didn't check Heavens above.
