Young Moon

At the start of our observing session here in Kerry tonight we were supprised to see the thiniest sliver of a young Moon (about 26 hours old I think) low in the west.

A 5 second exposure at ISO 1600 through the f10, 70mm Skylux with a Canon 300D.

After that we had a great public session with over 30 attendees. We got to see the three planets on show, the bits of the comet, and a couple of deepsky objects and more dispite the clouds.

Now that is a thin crescent..well done!

Apparently next month conditions will be good to allow the moon to the visible when it's only 13.5 hours old - not far off the world record for youngest moon observed.

Date to remember is 27 May, at about 22:00 the Moon will be at 3 degrees altitude, and 4 degrees to the right of Mercury. Should be a really cool sight if anyone manages to see it.

Just checked again and the new Moon was at 19.44 UT on the 28th. Trevor soptted it first on his way to the observing session at about 21:40 BST or 20:40 UT. This made it just 24 hours 55 minutes old.
The image above was taken at 21:57 BST.

Through the telescope the crescent appeared to be broken into sections, specially near the "horns".
