Lunar standstill is what John Flannery was referring to - the 18.6 year cycle. We've had one episode of really high moon this year and around the end of the summer we'll have a really low moon, combined with a harvest moon that should set a really good scene. I'll post dates and details after I look up where I saw this mentioned - S&T I think.
Pollution and athmospherics sounds like the cause - from South Dublin the last weeks have seen nothing but dirty skies low down with intermittent seeing at higher alts. Bring back the clear cold nights please! Never thought I'd hear myself wishing for cold Winter this close to Summer.

Thats very intertesting Eugene,
I was thinking to myself when I was looking at the moon during the week that it looked like pollution was causing the effect but I dismissed it as I couldnt see where the pollution would have so suddenly come from.
