transit of io was created by ftodonoghue
Hi all
This astronomy lark gets more addictive every time I get out under the stars. Tonight I saw my first transit of Io on Jupiter. Watching it slip accross the planet and seeing it for about 10 minutes before it got lost in the glare was pretty neat. As if that was not enough, the shadow arrived about 25 minutes after the moon disappeared.
Throw in some moments of excellent clarity and it made for an excellent couple of hours

I wish I had a telescope with the power to see that
All I could tell this evening was that there was a moon "missing"
Bart.

coruscations attending the whole length of the luminosity, giving to the phenomena the aspect of a wrathful messenger, and not that of a tranquil body pursuing a harmless course..comet of 1680

Hi Trevor,
I'm also in the observatory watching this one, its very interesting that Io is practically invisible on the disk, maybe its colour lends itself more to blending with the background planet colour, the shadow is "very" obvious as a black disk. Its still on at the moment and wont be finished for another 20minutes, the shadow wil be another 35 minutes after that.
and yes, its very addictive.
