Around my neck of the woods (Daingean, Offaly), the area between Croghan Hill and Tyrrellspass seems to have very little light pollution at all. I have yet t try and exploit this!

Ok.. I guess I was asking for that!

Sorry Frank - couldn't resist. Clarenbridge in Galway is very good given its proximity to the City. There's plenty of accessible land around but if you need a spot, PM me.

Another place to maybe look at would be Coole Park (between Gort and Galway) but that may be locked up at night - I'm not sure.

Hi Frank,
The club (SAC) used to use on of the hills south of Limerick, it has good skies, you should ask Tony about it next time you see him.
As for the here and now, you already have a much better sky then many on this site.
We used to Cratloe in the good auld days, the lake was a great site for observing, but nowadays its just too risky.

I hear ya dave.
The Cratloe lake sounds good but I would'nt fancy bieng up around that neck of the woods on my own!

I have found a spot in Shannon (the car park of the flying club)
which has nearly 360deg views of the horizon and pretty much no
light pollution.

Still it's a fairly creepy place even in broad daylight!
I guess them's the breaks.

Frank,
Maybe you could organise an observing night there sometime, I'm sure some of the lads in the club would be interested, including me.

Does anyone know of any good dark sites with clear views?

www.lightpollution.it/dmsp/index.html - they do maps (though of quite a large scale), and they also do a plug-in for Google Earth (that I cannot find right now).
