Possible meteor / fireball report from Kerry was created by philiplardner
Folks,
I read this report from a fellow hang-glider pilot living in Allihies, in the depths of Kerry. Can anyone shed any light or confirm this report?
Philip.

Slightly off list but;
Did anyone else in the South experience the possible meteor at 1100
this morning? Here in Allihies it's overcast and raining - I'd just
been checking my mail when there was a bright flash, then the phone
started to ring, but when I answered there was no-one there. I
assumed a lightning strike had caused it to ring, but then from
behind Knockgour hill (so from the East) came a loud rumbling, like
thunder but continuing. It passed overhead travelling West out to
sea and went on for about 30 seconds - nothing visible but in all the
fields around the animals were running round scared.
I'd guess it was a large meteor, and that the electrical disturbance
was from ionised air being pushed along by it, but I'd be interested
to know how large an area was affected - it must have come over from
the Bantry/ Cork direction, anyone else see or hear it?
Tony

It is in County Cork just over the border with Kerry. That would put it about 50 miles southwest of Killarney as the crow (or meteor) flies.
I was outside at that time in Listowel (over 60 miles away) and heard or saw nothing. But that is nor supprising considering the distance.
Great report though

Thats a fairly remote area, not alot of people down there, and given the terrain, it would be almost impossible to find anything if it reached the ground.
