Solar Phenomenon Query was created by eclipsedan
I saw this on the 10th of August as I waited for my bus. Just wondering what it is. A sun-dog, perhaps?

Great, thanks. It's the first time I've seen something like this since reading "Out of the Blue". And it only took about 8 months of incessant viewing!
I was pretty luck to have the camera on me though. All the people queuing for the bus thought I was insane when I started frantically emptying my luggage on the path.
Anyway, completely off my original topic, for eclipse and solar imaging (and general photography), a Nikon D70 or Canon 300D?
Thanks again,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,
you have two lovely images of a "Sun Dog", check out www.eaas.co.uk/club_members/jmcc_astrophotography_page_6.html
to see image I took some time back. It's as well you had the camera as sometimes they don't last too long!
Regards,
Johnmc9929.

Hi Daniel,
That a nice pic of a sun dog, was the second one ever visible.
As for the 300D or D70, that a good question, I'd imaging it would come down to the number of features each camera has, have a look at
apphotnum.free.fr/N2B28.html
You can see they're fairly evenly matched.
The CANONS chip is CMOS and the NIKON in CCD, ccd is usually what are used in "proper" astro cameras, but thats for light sensitivity, here the 2 chips are probabily evenly matched, they must be as they used in the same application.
There are a number of gripes against the Canon if your a professional photographer, like issues regarding the flash and rapid succesive exposures, and other things astronomers would not care too much about.
Therer are 2 features the 300d doesnt have and they are mirror lock and iso3200 exposure, but both of these can be "installed" with a quick ram upgrade over the web (I havent bothered yet).
Personally, I'd go for what ever camera you can get cheapist..
Also look at
www.photo.net/equipment/canon/10dvs300d.html

Nice photos there, John. Indeed the sun-dog faded quite rapidly so I was lucky.
The 2nd one wasn't visible, Dave. I think that's what confused me as to what it was, since I expected a pair.
On the 300D or D70, I can get the Rebel for quite a bit cheaper. However, I have more of a leaning towards the D70. So I'm just trying to weigh up whether the leaning is worth the cash  We'll see.
