just been out for a stroll with the mutt and noticed that mars ,sirius,rigel and i think procyon form a lovely cross in the evening sky

I'm not 100% sure but a few weeks ago when i was out "walking".....i did notice Mars, and 3 stars kinda forming a cross.
I may be completely wrong about this but this post is kinda deja vu. There was Mars (bright), Rigel (bright) and Sirius (bright)............so thats 3 out of 4......aint bad............there was a 4th star.
It really stood out in the sky.

Because they are all just dots, you can make out a prominent cross with almost any set of bright stars any where in the sky.
