March 5 solar prom was created by jeyjey
It was a bit nippy out this morning and a stiff breeze made the hands cold, but the sun warmed my black observing hood nicely.

Not much action on the limb, but this one caught my fancy:

Wow, thats a very good sketch representation Jeff, spot on. Done in chalk?

Seanie --

White Derwent Graphitint pencil. It's slightly harder than a Conte crayon, which is slightly harder than a pastel pencil. (But not nearly as hard and waxy as a watercolor pencil.)

I've never tried chalk, but Deirdre would likely know how it compares to the others. (I'd guess similar hardness to the Graphitint, but much less oily than any of the above.)

Cheers,
-- Jeff.

I have used chalk pastels on some sketches in the past (Jupiter and the Orion Nebula being favourites). They are nice to use but you do have to treat them like regular chalks as you don't want inadvertent smudges. The downside is that if you make a mistake in your sketch, it is hard to come back from it.

Ahh... sounds like they're the same thing as a pastel pencil only in stick form (like the Conte crayons).

In which case the Derwent Graphitints are a slightly harder version wrapped up in a wood shell. Highly recommended.

Cheers,
-- Jeff.

Thanks Jeff, I must keep an eye out for that media to see what they are like.
