Today's sun sported probably the coolest active region I've yet seen.

There was also a very interesting prom. While it contained a few "normal" feathery regions, it also had some very sharply defined regions that weren't just spikes -- they were curvy but not wispy. I don't recall ever seeing ones like that before.

The spicules, in contrast, were rather muted and contained less variation in height than recent memory.

Cheers,
-- Jeff.

Fine sketch Jeff.
Saw this through the SF50 telescope in TCD today - part of trinity week.
Was at low magnification though so didn't see anywhere tnear that level of detail.

Michael --

Could you see the spicules through the SF50?

I can't see them in the SM40, but I'm not sure it that's a function of aperture or central obstruction (or a little of both).

It was a public outreach event so only had timefor a quick peek.
it was at very low magnification so I didn't see any.

However, I made an adapter plate to mount my daystar 75mm ERF (which came with the T-Scanner) onto the 16" SCT. The spicules are very easy to see with that combo. While this adapter works fine for the daystar filter, which came in a cell, I need something more solid for the 135mm D-ERF. Hope to get this sorted one way or the other over the next week.

Michael.
