Nice sketches, Michael. That was a heck of a prom, wasn't it?
While tempted to sketch it, I had some new materials for doing surface detail that I wanted to try out. Here's the area trying to become an active region:
Cheers,

Interesting sketch Jeff.
I like the choice of paper as it gives a textured-effect similar to that of the chromosphere.
Is the paper that shade of grey, of did you shade it yourself?
Interesting structure in there.
I might take a peek at it today in both Ha and white light.
Michael.

Michael --
It's gray Mi Tientes paper. That's actually the smoother of the two sides; I thought the rougher one would work even better and so tried that first, but I didn't much like the result.
Still not happy with the new technique, but it bears enough promise to keep experimenting. My first problem is that the black is too high contrast, and I couldn't digitally lower it without losing the background texture. I think I'll try a gray Conte Crayon (or perhaps dark red) for the darker details next time.
-- Jeff.
