ISS + something else was created by Frank Ryan
Hi all.
I just went outside to catch the ISS passing at 23.33.
About a min before the pass there was an object pass
over (my wife spotted it ) about 40deg high but going West to East
as the ISS was to.
We agreed that 'that must be it' as it was around -3 mag and
did not dim or flare as an iridium would.
One thing that struck us both was that it was really moving.
(and no it wasn't a plane!)
Then as we were just about to head in, along comes the ISS
on the track predicted by Heavens Above, then followed by
progress the supply craft.
I don't have starry night any more so I'm just curious as to
what it was, or did anyone else see it?
Nice Moon out also tonight.

I have seen some speedy satellites move across the sky before too Frank. I'm guessing they are just in a lower orbit hence they are closer and appear to move faster.
Heck, only 4 weeks ago on a Sunday night I caught 3 separate satellites travelling in generally the same direction, though not parallel, cross paths, and one caught up with another one and over took it.
Who said satellite watching is always the same!
Seanie.

I thought you were going to say you saw the 'triplet'.
I saw them a few years ago and it was very cool,
obviously military but to see the 3 in triangular formation
moving along was a sight.
Actually. I wonder why more people have not seen this.
Or is it an urban myth?
But what are the odds of 3 satellites moving along
at exactly the same speed and brightness equidistant from each other....
BTW, the shape in binos of the ISS is really obvious these days,,,
people are sighting it in daylight now...not when the sun is high of course
but I wonder just how bright this space station will end up appearing.

I have also seen the NOAA Triplet on 3 occasions. There are some places on the net where you can get shortrange predictions of their passes, but publicly, they are never officially released.

OK.
I've ran starry night with an older version of Quicktime
to get the satellites working again and still no joy.
Can anyone else shed some light on this I wonder?

I ran starrynight and found nothing before the ISS but did find a "progress m-02M" following behind the ISS, a similar path and about a minute after it.
Maybe you saw the ISS first and the Progress after it ?
