I think I saw a fireball?!? was created by Sizzzzzle
Hi,

Was getting out of the car at my house (in Galway) after 11.30pm, friday 4th September. Looked up at the sky and was thinking blasted clouds! Then I saw a really bright orange ball flying over the sky, and rather lowish I thought cause I could see it even though it was cloudy.
Could it have been a fireball? I read on the Astronomy Ireland mail that there was a fireball spotted on Weds or Thurs night.
If was was a fireball .... cool!

You should note as much as you can about the observation - time - location in sky (can use reference points like where you were standing and roof tops that it passed over - what angle to the reference points etc so you can make a stab at an alt and azimuth for your timg).

Note how bright it was - compare with the moon for example - very handy. Did it streak - was there a trail how did it go out of view - behind a roof or did you see it fizzle out.
What was the ball like - did fragments apear to come of it - like a fire work. And last was there a sound and what is your recollection of af any delay.

Theres a link on Astronomy Ireland for reporting such things and I think thats the sort of stuff they seek. I reported one long whle back - not convinced that there was any followup.
If it was an incoming meteorite multiple observations can lead to possibly finding it (though that is improbable).

I'd also try to elliminate things might be confused for a fireball - a distant firework for example. There's a few occassions where Chinese lanterns can be very deceiving. And not to rule out ball lightning though that is rare.

It is exciting to see one (and I believe I have seen one) - the adrenilin sort of kicks in.
