Did anyone else spot the fireball travelling east to west towards Bootes on Wednesday evening at 21:21hrs? I spotted it and a few members of the public who also got in touch. It was nothing too spectacular, but a certain someone says his company's switchboard was 'jammed with calls' following the event. He even reckons it made landfall. I doubt it, given what I saw.

The certain person was using it as a publicity stunt for his event whom he wanted "everyone and their friends to attend", the event occured last night that I presume will be told attracted "hundreds" of astronomers:silly:

I heard it on Morning Ireland alright but from one source only. Sure, the IFAS boards were silent on the subject so it either wasn;t seen by many people or it was a bit of a damp squibb as fireballs go...
What interested me was that (i'm not quoting verbatim here) that money was mentioned - i.e. the monetary value of bits picked up by eagle-eyed members of the public. I thin 100K was mentioned in the context of a woman in Wexford(?) a few years ago... The chancess of happing on meteorite fragments, *knowing* that they are meteorite fragments and then *knowing* where to sell them for max profit are pretty small. But of course, that wasn't mentioned. Why wasn't I surprised?
The coincidence of the fireball and the weekend event was very fortuitous indeed

Not quite, Dave! It was brilliant, but maybe around mag -6 to -7 at brightest, it travelled fast, fizzed and changed from orange to blue-white with some tiny fragmentaton before being extinguished near Bootes. I got a couple of calls via the MAC website about it and some listeners to the show that night on Midlands 103, not a huge amount, but enough to say that some thought it was worth asking about.

A certain someone was on Drivetime tonight. Current data (from presumably the thousands who "jammed" the phone lines) shows it may have landed in an area of a few thousand sq km between Galway and somewhere else (I forget - I quickly "tuned" out...)
Neeedle-haystack anyone?
