Seriously bright unknown satellite pass above the moon ?? was created by dave_lillis
Hi All,
I'm just in from the back garden, just saw a seriously bright and extremely slow satellite just pass above the moon from west to east, lost in somewhere in Gemini, sky was still blue so it was hard to tell, it got dimmer and red as it entered the Earths shadow, it would easily be as bright as Jupiter or the ISS, took a few minutes to cross about 30 degrees of sky, going unbelieveably slow, could almost not tell it was moving. Saw it from 18.55 - 1902
There is nothing in starrynight for it and no ISS passes are due.
Was looking at it through 25x100 binos, not steadily though, had a definite shape as stars were pinpoint, so focus was ok,
Anyone else see it ????
P.S. Mercury and Jupiter were easily seen on the SW horison, nice, get a look during the week if you can,.

'Sounds' like you saw the Nanosail D
but I don't think it was due to pass then.
Strange one

My first thought too Frank. Tonights passes were mag 3 or 4 though. Does it get much brigher than that. What Dave was describing sound like Mag -3 -4 though

It's going to get brighter.
Nasa predict possible flares 10x
that of Venus.
!?!
Its because overhead its perpenducular to the observer
but near horizon it will be face on and
reflecting fully.
Should be awesome.
Heavens Above & the like dont know
how it will flare yet so it's very much a wait
and see thing.

well, ive never seen anything go so slow in the sky, it was almost imperceptable, and easily as bright as the ISS, so maybe it was the sail, who knows, dont know what it was and probabily never will now, pity no one else saw it.
