Strange sighting

Hi, I am new to this forum and was wondering if someone could help me identify what I saw on Thursday morning (10/11/11).
It basically looked like a singular firework shooting across the sky, much bigger than any shooting star I have ever seen before and it was obviously within our atmosphere. It was a bright white light with a trail behind it, it only appeared for a couple of seconds and then disappeared....any ideas?

Sounds like it was something entering the atmosphere.
Debris or a fireball.

Thanks Frank! That's what I thought it might be. I wonder if it possible to find it? Although it did looks as though it entered the atmosphere and then exited...
