Jupiter close to double star was created by flt158
Good evening, all. Between 5.30 to 7.00pm tonight (2nd January), I was observing Jupiter and the Moon about 5 degrees apart. Thanks to Guide 8, a computer program I bought from Planet Pluto, I noticed that Jupiter is just inside the border of Pisces. However just northwest of the great planet, I noticed a faint double star which called Struve (STF) 178. This star is only about 1 degree from Jupiter. Both components are about 7.4 magnitude each and are only 3.3 arcseconds apart at position angle 200 degrees. I needed 112X to split the star and by 167X the stars were truly split -very nice. STF 178 is actually in neighbouring constellation Aries. Do check it out when any of you get the opportunity. It is my 10th double star I have observed in Aries and a new one for me. The telescope I use is a 6.2" apochromatic refractor.

Yours, Aubrey.

Sorry about that, John. I am just back observing after a 6 months of absence. My wife and I have not been living at home because the builders were doing serious work at our humble abode. Now I'm back ready for all action.
It will be great to see your scope in action, John. Tell us about the mount that is coming. Hopefully it will be perfect for you. Perhaps you will bring the whole system to Sandymount some Friday. Not this Friday though. It will be stormy. If Friday 13th January is clear, maybe we shall see Venus and Neptune 1 degree apart -if we are early enough.
It is only a matter of time, when you, John, will be ready to go.

Yours, Aubrey.
