Dolphin Doubles was created by lunartic_old
Hi there all

Taking advantage of the clear skies I delved into Delphinus and prised out some doubles.

Here's the list:

STF 2703: WOW, what a start, a triple system consisting of a yellow, orange and white collection of stars. Great colour contrast and so easy to find close to Beta Delphini, definitely worth checking out.

STF 2718: A pair of 7.5 mag. white stars with a wide separation of 8.5
STF 2701: Nice colour contrast with the orange primary and white secondary. Tight at 2.1, though easily split.
STF 2713: A tight pair of 9th mag. white components, split at x100.
STF 2725: A nice contrast of the dull orange and brilliant white. With components of 7.5 and 8th mag the split was easy and wide separation being 5.7.

STF 2720: An 8.5 mag. pair of white stars, quite close at 3.8.
STF 2722: A yellow primary accompanied by a white secondary, nice contrast, 8 & 8.5 mag., wide at 7.5, easy to split at x100.
STF 2736: A double I liked, the primary is a pale yellow with a white companion. The colours were quite similar with the primary a step up from white, perhaps it is a little further up the evolutionary scale. Easily split at x100 with a separartion of 5.1.

STF 2730: Dull orange and white 8th mag. stars make a nice image, and gives the impression of pleasant warmth from the primary and intense cold from the secondary. A little tight at 3.3, but not a difficult split at x100.

I have noticed that when stars are of a similar magnitude they are so much easier to split, a tight pair of 8.5 mag. stars can be split with ease, with stars of 2nd and 8th magnitudes being more difficult due to the glaring differences in brightness, even if the separation is wider.

At times I find it hard to pin down a star's colour, many years ago a friend gave me a tip, he told me to defocus the star and the colour will be noticeable. This tip was invaluable and it really works, try it yourself the next time you're out.

Thanks for your time.

Paul
