Strange sighting was created by michaelotoole
At approximately 9:00 on Few 18 (2013) I had just set up my scope and was testing out a pair of binoculars I bought the other day...
The sky was remarkably clear and I was looking at the moon to see exactly how much detail I could make out having never used binoculars at night before...
What I can only describe as a fireball although not exactly circular raced across my field of view...
I only saw it for about twenty seconds or so as it disappeared behind the houses.. It come from my left and disappeared to my right (I was looking westward)... it appeared to be falling or at least it's trajectory appeared arced...
I had taken off my glasses to use the binoculars, so I can't give a more accurate description except to say it was very big...
It's impossible to estimate the size of the object but suffice to say if it was near say around 10,000 feet or less, I might have expected to hear some sound, if 20,000 feet (air traffic), then it's size would have been enormous...
Any reports of similar sightings?
Mike

It amazes me in this day and age we don't have all-sky cams operating 24/7 to pick up incidents like these - the UK seems no better based on September's fireball, when we were reliant on shaky amateur footage...

What I found strange was the number of such sighting and trying to determine which was which...
There is no question of the time I saw this object (Sunday 17th 21:00 -/+ 5 minutes max) yet other reports are for at least one hour later...
To confuse matter some of the reports I have read did not include a date at all, so I don't know if they were reporting the same object... Other reports were for 22:50 but did not mention the date... So was there one or more and if only one, did any one else see it...
I know I said "approximately 9:00 on Few 18 (2013)" but of course it was the 17th...
I actually posted in another forum @ (17 February 2013 - 09:23 PM) directly after the sighting so I pretty much confident it was 21:00 hours...

haven't heard of it, but thanks for posting, we should all post the stuff we have seen.... I've seen one strange thing when living in Morocco, a motionless spear of green / blue light very bright, visible in noon sun. It dissappeared instantly rather than fading like a meteor trail. Closest thing would be a star trek style phaser Awe inspiring.

Please consider also reporting on arpc65.arm.ac.uk/fireballs/index.html
Looking back there appear to be a couple of sighting on Feb18th arpc65.arm.ac.uk/cgi-bin/fireballs/browse.pl
Btw, there are automated meteor cameras in Armagh. IIRC they are wide angle in specific directions but not 'all sky'.

Ahead of you there, already reported it there... I signed my Mike...
How can one see the automated meteor cameras in Armagh... Do they record and save?
