Saturn's changing ring brightness. was created by jmckeon
This is an amimated gif I put together of various Saturn observations. Once per Earth orbit Saturn is at opposition, this is when the Sun > Earth > Saturn are in a straight line. As a result of this Saturn's rings have a temporary surge in brightness when viewed from Earth, called the Seeliger effect. Saturn's opposition was the 28th April this year and for that day or so Saturn's rings were significantly brighter. The gif shows just how much the brightness changed over the next two months.

Wow! So Saturn's rings really do change in brightness over a few months.
