Hi Paul,

I downloaded the Henry Draper catalogue and had a look at HD 177119. It coincides almost exactly with a faint double of 11th magnitude stars. SU Sgr lies 8.5' to the NW, and HN 129 lies 6' due South.

The centaur hides many secrets in its heart, revealing them only grudgingly to those who approach cautiously, seeking knowledge (sorry).

Thanks Mike

The next clear night, if visible, I'm going back to check this star out, maybe I've discovered a new double. :bigshock:

I got out again last night and tracked down that troublesome double, I found the field, and there was no double. :-( I could see SU Sagittarii with ease, but there was no companion.

Apologies to everyone for my false sighting, I can't imagine what it was I was looking at.

Let's call it my M102 moment.

Hi Paul,

My guess is that you observed HN 129, it's only 13' from SU Sgr. Have a look at the attached chart, which is centered on the position of HD 177119. I'm hoping to get out tonight, but I have no view low to the South. Keep those reports coming.

Thanks Mike, I'll have a look the next time it's visible.
