Doubles and Triples in Aries was created by flt158
Good evening, double and triple star admirers. I have been working through Aries over the years, and recently having been recommended by John Flannery to purchase Sissy Haas's book "Double Stars for small telescopes", I can safely say I have completed her list of these stars in Aries -granted all the stars I have split have taken 2 decades to complete.
This is the list for last Monday night -13th January:
1. Mesarthim, Gamma Arietis, triple: A=4.5, B=4.6, C=9. Separation: 7.5". All split @ 40X.
2. Lambda Arietis: double: A=4.8, B=6.7. Separation: 36". Split @ 11X.
3. Struve 194: double: A=7.6, B=9.5. Separation: 1.3". I amazed to split this one @ 140X and 167X.
4. Struve 366: triple: A=7, B=10, C=10.5. Separation: 47" and 1.9". Very difficult to split B and C. I needed 280X and averted vision to know for certain.
5. Epsilon Arietis: double: A=5.2, B=5.6. Separation: 1.4". Most majestic! Split @ 167X and 225X.
6. Struve 291: triple: A=7.5, B=7.7, C=9.5. Separation: 3.1" and 65". All split @ 112X.
7. Struve 305: double: A=7.5, B=8.3. Separation: 3.6". Split @ 112X.
8. 30 Arietis: double: A=6.5, B=7. Separation: 38". Split @ 11X.
9. Struve 300: double: A=7.9, B=8.1. Separation: 3.2". Split @ 112X.
Of course, I now have observe further doubles in Aries using Burnham's Celestial Handbook. I shall try a few the next time.
Thank you for reading.
Aubrey.

Nice one Aubrey, Aries is one of those constellations that tends to be overlooked in favour of its larger neighbours, thanks for bringing some of its gems to our attention.

Thank you, Paul. Here is a few more Valerie and I saw tonight Wednesday -all seriously dim.
1. Struve 226 double: A=8, B=10. Separation: 1.8". Needed 167X and 225X for this one.
2. Struve 237 double: A=8.5, B=9. Separation: 14". Split @ 40X.
3. Struve 240 double: A=8.3, B=8.5. Separation: 4.8: Split @ 40X and 112X.
4. Struve 244 double: A=9.3, B=9.5. Separation: 4.7: Split @ 112X and 167X. Probably my faintest double ever.
These 4 doubles are in Burnham's book -none are in Sissy Hass' .
Oh and I have to add an asteroid: it was north of Struve 237 - Massalia. It was a mere 10.4 magnitude. How grateful I am to have Guide 8 to bump into this fellow. It was tough to see @ 40X, but easy to see @ 112X. Massalia is asteroid number 20. I must find out more about him. And add another post.
Thanks for reading this.

It seems that you are continuing the pattern of frequent observing into 2014 Aubrey - nice reports. I'm envious; family, work, and involvement in an all-consuming cult organisation (the GAA) are seriously restricting my observing opportunities. Nevertheless, I did nose about in Aries over the last year and had a look of some of the pairs you describe. Lambda and Mesarthim are particularly fine. Here are a few more that I thought were quite attractive. If you haven't already logged them they are worth a look.
Cheers,
Mike

Thank you, Mike, for these. I have observed 33 Arietis and 1 Arietis -the latter is a big favourite of mine. Orange and blue: I first saw it in the 1990's and I showed Valerie it a few days ago. I should eventually observe STF 391 and STF 394.
I have just set up the scope for the 8th time this month, and I am working through the Burnham Volume 1 at present. I hope to give another report later on. The skies appear to be clear again.
Aubrey.
