4 Central Peaks in Copernicus was created by flt158
Hello everyone. I had a brilliant night observing on Monday night (10th) from 8 to 10pm.
1. I started off with Jupiter and its 3 moons -Ganymede, Europa and Callisto. Then I sighted Io appearing from behind Jupiter's enormous shadow from 8.01pm. It took a full 2 minutes to gain its normal brightness. What a start!
2. I then observed the 9 day old Moon for about 30 minutes. For the 1st time in my life I could see 4 central peaks in the centre of Copernicus -the crater was right on the terminator!! Did anyone else enjoy this spectacular sight? I was using 167X. And to cap it, I saw the Gay-Lussac rille northeast of Copernicus -another 1st time observation for me. It appeared as a black line close to the terminator. 2 other features I also saw: Rupes Recta in the south and Montes Recta in the north
I plan to observe Sinus Iridium tonight -it should be right on the terminator.
3. Lastly, I went down to M42 / M43 the Orion Nebula and I could see all 6 stars of the Trapezium at a mere 112X -it was truly a very clear night last night, and tonight in Dublin promises to be the same.
Thank you for reading.
Aubrey.

Nice one Aubery, the first decent run of clear night in a while. The moon near Jupiter looks good right now.

Yes, Keith. And the Great Red Spot is visible at 167X. Also Europa, Io and Callisto are forming a gorgeous triangle on the west side. Callisto's shadow comes the disc at 9.25 pm. I am ready for it.

I did indeed see Copernicus on this night, it was really spectacular. I managed to get a good image too.

Beautiful shot, J McKeown. Copernicus and its 4 central peaks look magnificent in your photo. I already have it as my desktop background. I can also see the Gay-Lussac rille north of Copernicus as well as the double crater Fauth. Thank you so much. It is nice to know someone else was looking at the Moon at the same time as Valerie and myself. Keep up the good work. Perhaps I shall bump into you someday.
