Binocular Tripod/Mount was created by Keith g
Hi all, Have any of you any advice to give on tripod mounts for binoculars? I have a good pair of 9x60mm and i'm considering adding a good support for them. Now they are light, but sometimes i'd like to get a little more out of them after the hands get shaky . Problem is i'm 6ft 1" in height so i'd need one that extends all the way up to 7ft!!
Anyone know any good mounts/sites out there?
Thanks,
Keith.

Hi Keith,
I've been using a bog standard tripod (costing £20 at the time) for the last 15 years or so for my sirius 7x50s. I would consider a tripod a must for binoculars, I remember seeing the pleiades for the first time using the tripod and it was like using a completely different pair of binoculars.
You might consider parallelogram tripod with counterweight, very versatile for bigger binos.

Keith,
one of TAS's members (Bob Campbell) has made a few binocular mounts for the larger variety, or for those who want a self-supporting mount of a larger-than-is-the-norm height. There is a picture of it here from WSP '04. Let me know if your interested!

Cheap (<40EUR) tripods are generally unsteady, and always (literally) a pain in the neck.
I splashed out on a Manfrotto (link to jessops - the only place I could find an image offhand) a year or so ago and its great. Steady and tall enough so I dont bust my neck. Can hold 10x80's or an SLR with a 300mm lens no problem. It goes to 178cm, which is high enough for me for most uses; manfrotto make tripods up to at least 8 feet so you'll get something to suit, though it might cost a bit.
Cheers,
~Al
