Observing Gloves was created by Eugene Burke
Was in new shop the "Cork Angling & Outdoor Centre"at the Kinsale Road Commercial Centre and came across the perfect "Observing Gloves". :D
Theyre 3mm neoprene, fleece lining with fold backthumb ,index and middle finger tops they also have a velcro hold back, 8) they are even good enough to focus and change eyepieces with fingers enclosed theyre very light and keep hands toasty. At 12 Euro a pair very good value, they do a heavier one too, both called "ICE BEHR" www.icebehrfishing.de
Worth the money.
I reckon there should be similar ones in other fishing shops.
Regards & clear skies (and warm hands)

Nice one Trevor - as an ex-fisherman, I use all my old fishing gear (thermals, jacket, trousers, woolly hat, gloves etc). My experience of both fishing and observing (well, when I *used* to do visual observing :D ) is:

1. Keep your head and neck warm - a thermal woolly hat is essential - a balaclava underneath it or a scarf will keep your neck warm

2. Hands - neoprene is great. The ones with flip top fingers/thumbs are best

3. Feet - the most important part to keep warm. Neoprene socks (12 quid) are a godsend. Wear thick woolly socks over them and a comfortable fitting ankle boot (not shoes) or wellies.

4. Overtrousers are great for keeping out wind

5. Thermal underwear and lots of layers (jeans, t-shirts, vests, jumpers etc) will keep the rest of you toasty.

If you kit yourself out like this, you can observe at sub-zero temperatures for an hour or more. But prepare to pay good money for good kit. You can fishing gear that will keep you warm at temperatures up to -10 deg c. And its worth it for the die hard visual observers. I've had my kit for over 5 years and its as good as the day it was bought. But I did pay about 400 quid for the jacket, trousers and thermals... Worth every penny.

Top class fishing gear manufacturers are Fox or Ron Hutchison (the AP and Software Bisque of the fishing world).

A word of warning - buy cheap, buy twice.

Thanks for the tip Eugene - I've ordered a pair incidentally. 12 yo-yos, with 4.50 shipping and a five day delivery. Watch the temperatures soar!

I find them great and they also help keep law & order at observing sessions! ;)

Many years ago, I picked up a set of thermals from Damart. Damart are gone now but the thermals are still going strong. With the thermals in place a pair of good thermal socks, a thinsulate hat. I put a pair of trousers or jeans and a wooly jumper over that and top it off wih a good warm coat. In this config I can stay out all night without feeling the cold at all. Sometimes even in the coldest weather I have to take off the hat for a few mins to cool down.

Good find on the gloves Eugene, very useful.

Regards and Clear Skies,

Dave.
