LX200 & power suply was created by phoenix
I have a 10" LX200 GPS which gave up the ghost about two weeks ago. As it was still under warranty I sent it back to the supplier ( Telescope House) who promptly repaired the scope by replacing the front panel and returned the scope within a week. They even paid for pick up and return! Many thanks to them.
However here is my question. Is anyone out there using the LX200 AC power supply from astroengineering? Since the scope broke down I am concerned about the power supply. I always had the supply set at 12V but the nght that the scope stopped working I noticed that the switch had been knocked into the 9V position. Has anyone else got this AC adapter and if so what setting do you use for the LX.
The scope is still in the box untill I can be comletely sure about my power supply.
Many thanks
Kieran

Kieran, Mmmmm... I don't have the LX200, but what I can tell you is that if you suspect the power supply, then don't use it just yet! You might end up in the same situation again.
Maybe someone else could give you a better answer, but the next step is getting the power supply checked out - if that's possible. Otherwise, I would'nt use it until you know for sure.
P.S. Welcome to the boards - the home of Irish astronomy
P.P.S. If you don't get many replies - that because just a few of us are left at home - all the rest are gone to turkey for the total solar eclipse on wednesday
All the best,
Keith..

Hi Kieran,
Not sure how much help this will be but I get to use the LX200 that belongs to the physics department in NUIM for Astro2. The way they have it set up is they are using a powersupply from the physics labs that has dials at the front showing both current and voltage and also allows you to vary both these properties. This makes it easy to firstly see what kind of power you are getting and secondly to tweak it when it's not right. I have no idea how much one of those powersupplies costs though.
Bart.

When you say "power supply" is this one of those units you charge up and take it to the site or is it a unit you plug in to the mains and it generates a 12 Volt dc output? The former I trust the latter I don't. Also it would definately be worth checking the power supply out with a multimeter just to verify the outputs.
Running it at 9 Volts might be an issue if it requires 12 Volts but that (again) is a general statment.
Most likely it was one of those random things - but double check that power supply!

Just another thing I saw of note on the cloudynights forum, this is an article on power supply, it states that 12V is the normal for most scopes, but the LX200 takes 18V, and is an exception?????

See the 2nd paragraph...

Not according to the box ours came in! I'm convinced we've been running it at 12 Volts for years and it's still fine.
