Aiming a german equitorial mount was created by b318isp
Having got my first ever telescope, I'm struggling to get the hang of moving it around the sky. The aiming instruction with the scope don't help much.

I think I understand the alignment of the polar axis: I rough set the latitude on the scope, then set the right ascension at zero. Aim at Polaris and then accurately get the scope to point at it. Lock the polar axis in position and now the scope is polar aligned.

I now get stuck - there are three axis of movement: right ascension (the rotation around the polar axis), declanation ("left-to-right" rotation perpendicular to the polar axis) and rotation of the whole scope around the pivot on the tripod.

If I rotate the scope on the tripod, then the polar axis will not align. So this seems to limit the scope to the other two axis.

So, how do I aim at stars in a southery direction?

Sorry if these are really basic questions, but I'm getting really frustrated by not having some very basic knowledge! I've tried books, websites and a search here but I can't grasp it yet...

DON'T "rotate the scope around the pivot on the tripod".

The following is a link to an animated tutorial on the German Equatorial.

It's dead easy once you see it animated.
