Selecting a LCD Monitor for Image Processing was created by michaeloconnell
Just a general query:
What should one look out for when selecting a LCD monitor for image processing? How big a factor does contrast ratio play?
Thanks,

Well, according to Graphic Designers, etc, LCDs are not has capable at rendering colours correctly has CRTs.

Colour saturation is reduced with LCDs when compared to CRTs.
A high contrast ratio is better but even a screen with a high contrast ratio will have different levels of contrast depending on the room it is used in, the amount of light, etc.

One of the best things you can get is a Colour Calibrator like the Sypder Express 2 or similar, they will cost around €120 but will ensure your screen is always displaying accurate and correctly contrasted colours.

Hope that helps

I'm interested in this too. I just bought a new dell PC. It came with a 20" wide aspect Ultra sharp LCP panel. The panel is gorgeous and the size is just great for image processing. However on my LCD panel in work (nuch older) the contrast is much higher and i see a lot of noise I dont see on my new home screen. The good news is my new screen has a high contrast mode so I can flick to that to make sure that the image is not gonna look mad for people with high contrast screens.

I keep meaning to use the swatch that we discussed in another thread a while back and calibrate to that. I'll just process to match that and then if anyone doesn't like it then basically tough luck.

I do a lot of print and web work- I stick to two 19" CRT screens- take up a lot of room, but just can't be beaten for picture quality, and were pretty cheap.

The Mac TFT's are pretty amazing, but they have a pretty amazing price tag too... :)

They came down a bit a few weeks ago but they are still not cheap! I have one at work and I can say without any hesitation that you get what you pay for. I have the "smallest" of the Apple Cinema displays but at 20" it's not really small! The quality is stunning.
