in the manual for my sct, it says that before you can focus there are two screws that need to be losened, as they hold the mirror steady. where are thosescrews?there are two black screws on the side of the tube near the back, but i dont know if i should losen them or not as im not sure if they are the mirror locking screws.( its a celestron 6" sct)

Mirror locking screws are used for transportation. They hold the mirror in place whilst your scope get bumped around on it journey.
Yes, they need to be completely slackened or removed before you can focus.
It is unlikely that a 6" scope has a morror locking screw - my C8 (8" SCT) doesn't have them but larger OTA's usually do because the mirror is so much heavier.
The mirro locking screws will be on the back plate - where your focusing knob is. they weill be clearly visible and will usually be a thumbwheel type (so you don't need a screwdriver to remove them).
They will not be on the side of the OTA.
If you can move the focuser freely more than say three or four turns and you see no screws within a few inches of the focuser knob (other than those attaching the focusing mechanism to the back plate) then you don;t have mirror-lock screws and all will be fine.

Carl - yes they are on the 14" SCT but they are not on the 8" SCT. I'd therefore be surprised if they are on the 6" SCT - especially with the description given indicating that there is nothing on the back plate...
