i've never heard of this on a photographic tripod before, hence the necessity for the astrotrac, but you might be onto something here, for someone with the engineering expertise, it might not be too difficult to attach a motor to allow adjustment and even moderate tracking, but anyone with this ability would most likely make a custom version of an astrotrac. which idea would be easier to implement i cannot say.
on seeing your question i done a quick google search and found motorized tripod heads do exist but you have to buy the entire specialized head, and cant just attach a motor to a standard head, and they are generally just for remote controlling of the tripod and don't have a tracking facility.
can a motor be attached to it to drive it? Is it that kind of a mount, or just a really good camera tripod?
Seanie.

Seanie.
The Astrotrac is only one link in the chain.
As with scopes the mount is of utmost importance
and seeing as there are other links in the chain
you really need all of them to be solid or else your set
up will let you down.
Again, yes the AT is expensive
but you are paying for the portability.
A motorised geared head?
Why?

Nah, I was thinking out loud that the (Manfrotto) tripod+mount could be motorised like what I have with the Skylux mount. I didn't think it through at the time I said it tough, what with the need for some sort of an equatorial wedge.

Just read the S&T review.
It got the usual high praise.
I'm pretty sure the big names are working on a prototype of their own.

Seainie.
In case you are still thinking about investing in this set up.
I found a good seller on ebay for used but still excellent Manfrotto 410 geared heads for 150 euro inc postage.
My local Photography store charge 210.
I've ordered the 2nd one as an experiment.
I plan to mount the ETX125 ota onto the astrotrac using one
410 for accurate polar alignment and a 2nd for accurate scope positioning.
I've been thinking it out in photoshop...
Mad or what!?
If it works great, If not I'll just have a 410 going cheap!
(pic would not attach so here is a link to it.
