The JMI Motofocus can't be controllled by the etx, JMI sells a different controllable focuser, the Smart Focus.
BTW, I bought a JMI motofocus about 3 weeks ago and have used it twice and it has seized up already.
There is some negative reviews of the ETX focusers on web.

wow after only two weeks. k thanks for the heads up,with that in mind and the lack of availability of the #1247, do you have any tips for ease of focusing. i have tried bracketing (adjust and check, and repeat) but it leaves me unsure weather my fuzzy images are the result of atmospheric haze or poor focusing.

Turns out it was only a dead battery. I had checked the voltage on the output of the controller, but didn't check the current. D'oh
