Removing IR Filter was created by whyulittle
Hi folks,
Haven't been around in a while, but when I was last here, people were removing the IR filter from their cameras. I can't find any search facility, so apologies if I'm starting a new unnecessary thread.
Basically when I was here last I was trying out some long exposure shots for star trails, milky way and stuff like that, nothing deep sky. They weren't coming out great though, and someone on here advised that even shooting from a totally dark spot, there would still be a lot of colour in the sky due to the IR filter?
I now have a spare 300D, and was wondering is it worth taking out the IR filter for what I want to do? Like I said, I wouldn't be putting it to any great use like some of the deep sky shots on here. Is it a big job taking it out, need much knowledge on electronics cameras?
Any advise would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
EDIT: Meant to also ask, if I was to leave the camera as is, is there a good quality fix in Photoshop? I also remember something about taking two shots, one with the lens cap, and one with it off, and merging the two shots together?

Here's an article, I wrote a while back on the subject.

If you have any questions just ask. You need to be fairly handy with managing small components/cables to do this and also be familiar with operating a soldering iron. If you are not , just don't do it.
