aaaaaaahhhhhh. i see. that makes sense. now that i think about it, i cant see why i was doing it the other way as it couldnt have worked! I believe this is what Mr Sammy Jackson would call "A moment of clarity"!!

Yeah, the index markers were about 20 degrees off on my CG5Goto. Confused about the two star alignment though, mine only has three star alignments, two to the west of the meridian and one to the east.
That used to get me as wellYou must centre polaris by adjusting the position of the mount using the altitude and azimuth screws,
Actually shouldn't you be centering it in the polar scope shaft rather than the Eyepiece of your scope? i.e. take the cap off the front and back of the shaft and turn the scope 90 degrees so you can see a round hole straight through, & center polaris in there. That's the only way I've ever got decent tracking from the mount. Don't worry if Polaris is not in your eyepiece as the mount will calculated the cone error after a few goes and the goto should be back on track.and i then use the keypad to centre polaris in the eyepiece.
