Aperture for aperture, a refractor will yield a larger image compared to a reflector. However, until quite recently, the reflectors held the podium finish for image quality because of the lack of (surface reflecting) glass in the path of light to your eye(s). That advantage made reflectors the best choice for astrophotographers.
Nowadays, demand has made some of the best glass types which minimise surface reflection and diffraction become readily available for large refractors to be affordable, and thus become the weapon of choice when out in the field... astronomically speaking, of course!
