Star diagonal damage was created by pj30something
Hi all just looking for advice, suggestions.

I have noticed that the tube on my star diagonal that fits into the scope has a groove all the way around it that cuts into it. This has been caused by my bad habit of turning the star diagonal (and EP) from the 12 o clock position to different positions without loosening the screws that hold it in place.

Basically the screws have eaten into the SD tube as it is being turned and eroded it to leave a small groove in it.

So far it doesnt case the SD and EP to slip but i'm sure it might if it gets deeper.

Should i replace the SD or will it really not be a major issue?

Is there anything i can use (non-corrosive) to fill the groove thus restoring it to the way it was?

I was thinking of maybe squirting a bit of silicone into it and then changing my habits thus causing no further damage to the newly repaired SD.

Am i worrying about nothing?

Silicone is too flexible. You could fill it with epoxy, but I wouldn't bother. If it gets too much of a ridge on either side of the groove you may need to sand it down a bit to ease entry/exit, but aside from that I'd ignore it.

Thanks Jeff. The ridge on either side of the groove is not very big right now.....so small that it wouldnt warrant sanding down. The groove has a dept of maybe 1mm (if even).

Guess i'll just leave it and start being more careful.
