Ususally they screw into the eyepiece (the opposite end from the bit you look into).
btw, Meade have a special filter set for the ETX-70, which appear `lighter` than regular filters. Is this because regular filters would be too dark for a 70mm scope?

I thought that but then read something which said it's dangerous if you have them in the wrong place, something to do with the lens so I just thought I'd check...

Well yea, you want to make sure thay are screwed in properly and dont fall out into the scope and onto the lens/mirror
