Anyone suggest a drive for the Skylux? was created by eclipsedan
Some plans for the upcoming eclipse:
I want to take some photos of the chromosphere/prominences with the Skylux 70mm. I had great success with coronal shots in 2006 and would like to use it with a 2x converter. Add the 1.6x crop of the 20D and we're seriously zoomed in.
I think a drive is almost certainly necessary for this to work well. Can anyone suggest a drive? Money *is* an object!
A final side question, I'm shooting the corona with a Canon 600mm f/4L and 40D. I've got a carbon fibre tripod and a very decent ball head. I'm happy enough just to guide this myself. However, if it were possible to sort out some tracking mount with this, I could automate everything with a laptop. Would it be possible to get it tracking with simply the above equipment plus drive? I presume I'd need an equatorial drive instead. Sorry for the n00b question but I've simply never tracked before.
And for those who are interested, I've a TC-80N3 remote for a Tokina 11mm-16mm f/2.8 and 350D. That should cover it from all angles. You can see why I want to automate this as much as possible. It would be easy to be behind a view finder for the whole thing!
Cheers,
Daniel

Have a look at this thread where the skylux mount and tracking are discussed:
www.irishastronomy.org/boards/viewtopic.php?t=8455
I'm bringing it to Greece on Wednesday and hope to put it to the test there. I'll know a bit better then just how well it really works.

Yes I saw this thread. Is this the drive?

I can live with that price!

I meant to add that I like the set-up!
Which one of the following drives would do the job?
www.telescopesales.co.uk/mntsky.htm
They look even cheaper. It looks like I would have a lot of reading to do. I think it's just easier to ask the experts which one works for what I want to do!

This is the one I have:
www.widescreen-centre.co.uk/Products/EQ2_RA_Drive.html
What the difference is, I've no idea, but thi is the one I have and it fits the skylux mount which I have. From the only night I have tested it, it would appear to track accurately enough for wide-angle photography for a couple of minutes at least. I can't say any more than that really until I try it out under a clear dark sky and test it fully.
I'll know alot more about it in a week. If it doesn't work for 5-10min exposures for astrophotography, I'll be selling it next week. That's not to say it won't work for tracking and for very short exposures though, so could still work for your eclipse project.

Single speed motor should be fine. Make sure it is a fixed speed though and not a user adjustable via a dial as this can be difficult to calibrate exactly.
Also, make sure it has a switch for both the northern hemisphere and souther hemisphere. Mine works correctly when switched to the south!
