Have you considered picking up one of the Bresser R-102 refractors that Lidl put on offer the Monday before Christmas? It's a very reasonably priced f/9.8 achromat on a fairly sturdy GEM and some branches still have them in stock. There was one still left in the Kildare Town branch on Wednesday so I would expect that some other Lidl shops still have them in stock too.

I doubt whether you'd get a better price elsewhere for a similar scope (new).

Iwas thinking more of a 5 inch f12- f15 telescope There is an American firm D&G OPTICAL which do that type of scope but with shipping and customs duty it makes them expensive. There does not seem to be any UK firm making them.

If you're looking for a really good f/12-15 scope then a quality Mak might be more in your line, particularly if you want something made in the UK.

Personally I prefer refractors, but Orion Optics UK manufacture the well known OMC range of Maks in house in Crewe. If I wanted an APO quality scope with the resolution of a 4" refractor or greater and and a focal length longer than a metre that's what I would look at because bigger refractors are beast to handle - they have disadvantages of weight, length and the effects of windage combined with the 'law of the lever'. For instance, the dew shield on a 6" f/14 scope would extend over 1.3 metres or more beyond the scopes centre of gravity whereas the edge of the dew shield on an equivalent Mak would be less than have that distance. That means a significant reduction in the potential vibrations induced by a stiff breeze.

The OMC 140 (f/14) Mak is reported to be exceptional. The OTA is listed at £659 and with the exchange rate at £0.95+ to €1.00 now would be a good time to buy.

To the best of my knowledge Orion Optics is the only significant manufacturer of instruments for the amateur market in the UK but the plain fact is that it's too expensive to manufacture mass market optics anywhere in Western Europe and the only reason they are still making any models themselves rather than outsoourcing to China is that people are willing to pay a premium because of their reputation for quality.

THANKS for the information I was thinking of a refractor for ease of collimation.Ihave got an Orion Optics dx300 already and I find it difficult to keep collimated f 5.3 so as it would be permently housed on a losmandy g11 Iwas hoping the refracter would not be to much of a problen.

You might want to consider the Orion Optics 6" F/11 Newtonian. It sells for 399 pounds (comes on a Dobsonian mount) and your G 11 will handle it fine. Collimation at F/11 should be quite easy to maintain.

I've just finished making a 6" F/9.6 mirror and am waiting for it to come back from the coater. (My intent for this scope is also double star observing.) The tube is complete otherwise and ready to receive the mirror when it returns.

I've also fabricated a reticle micrometer using a Celestron Micro Guide and a 360 degree protractor. If all this doesn't bring on six months of clouds, nothing will!
