How Big a Difference do 2" Eyepieces Make? was created by Thargor
Hi everybody, I just got a Celestron 102 SLT and it has a 2" focuser but a 1.25" Star Diagonal which according to the reviews Ive read is perfectly fine but a bit on the cheap side and probably the weakest part of an otherwise great scope. So Im wondering what the difference is like to a visual only amateur novice like myself if I upgraded to a 2" diagonal and a couple of the 2" versions of the 1.25" Celestron EPs that come in that foam case you've probably seen on Ebay? Will it make much difference with a scope like this:
www.celestron.com/c3/product.php?CatID=8&ProdID=29
Thanks, btw I also have an ad in the Wanted section for a decent 2" Diagonal if anyone has seen a good deal recently. Also huge thanks to John Murphy for my new scope, my new astronomy setup I should say seeing as it came with 12v powerpack, 2X Omni barlow, and other freebies, cant recommend him enough, just wish Id bought it last Xmas when it was first mentioned now.
EDIT: While Im here I should also ask:
Is this the reducer Ill need to use my 1.25" EPs with the 2" diagonal if I eventually get one?
It slots into the 2" focuser on my so that it accepts the 1.25" diagonal that comes with it so Im 90% sure that it is but I just wanted to check.

Hi Thargor
My advice would be to invest in some decent eyepieces even if you only get one or two up front. Baader Hyperions are quite good at around €100 each-Vixen lanthanums are quite nice. If you can afford say a televue panoptic all the better - you will have it for life. Low cost eyepieces will usually disappoint.

It'll make a difference, how much of a difference is another question, to be honest the only way to find out is to meet up with someone and use their 2" eyepieces and see for yourself.
