Which to choose? was created by phil18ie
Planning to purchase a new telescope within the coming months and have decided to go with a dobsonian. I want to get as much aperture as possible for as little as possible without hindering on quality.
So, I've narrowed it down to these three:
www.astroshop.de/en/skywatcher-dobson-te...kdiamond-dob/p,14977
www.astroshop.de/en/skywatcher-dobson-te...200-pyrex-dob/p,5026
www.astroshop.de/en/skywatcher-dobson-te...200-pyrex-dob/p,5026
All comments and suggestions welcome.

Carrying around my 20" obsession is going to kill me,
but what a way to go.
+ 12"LX200, MK67, Meade2045, 4"refractor

Definitely the first one, the truss makes it easier to transport and store,
BTW, the second and third links are to the same item.

Hi Phil,
www.f1cameras.co.uk/shop.php?id=177&level=
a 12" for £635 (UK)...??
a free 8.5" ?? might be too late but you could try it!!
www.irishastronomy.org/forum?func=view&catid=17&id=80000
as a dob owner I had to come to terms when I bought my 10" Starhopper, I realised that imaging would be difficult at a planetry level and impossible at a deep sky level (for me!).
Unlike some other telescopes that break up into 3 (OTA/Mount/Tripod) Dobs usually on break up into 2 bits so it is a bit heavier but not a real issue unless you have a bad back!!
the fold up one looks nice but would prob need a lot of collimination after setup??.
Can I ask what are you upgrading from?

Hi Graham,
I wouldn't really want to go for anything quite as large as a 12" :woohoo: If it was a pizza then YES!
I'm upgrading from a Celestron 4.5" Reflector which I've had for almost 5 years now. She's a grand girl but it's time I moved on to bigger and better things. I thought the 8" would be a more suitable choice. Not too expensive, portable and value for money. I really would like to try my hand at imaging ( especially deep sky) so if my lifestyle doesn't surpass my income I might just go with an orion 8" Intelliscope!
How do you find using a dob yourself graham? what can you see with a 10"?

Programming today is a race between software engineers striving to build bigger and better programs, and the universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots. So far, the universe is winning.

You might want to check out the cost of the shipping as this might add a considerable amount to the price.
Scour the UK sites and see if you can pick one up cheaper.
If given the choice between an open tube and a solid tube, for portability go with the open truss, for value you might find you could get a 10" solid tube for the same price as an 8" truss.

I can see stars but thats just from lifting the thing!!
I havent really got stuck into observing, a waste I know! but I can see M57 as a definate smoke ring with a 2" 32mm(?) lens and a 2" barlow which looks fantastic!!
when I found M57 (Manually! no goto! am still a newbie at astronomy!!) it was amazing! there was suddenly more to astronomy then stars!
Then the rings of saturn blew me away!!
I plan to really take it for a spin shortly and do some real gazing! I usually get mad into it after the Astronomy Ireland SBQ (in 2 weeks) but then something comes up and it gets stuck in the corner!
actually is there an astronomy way of comparing telescopes such as 'mine is bigger then yours cause I can do XXXX with it!!??
