Dang Dave thats a real sharp image ya got there.
(I can only imagine what it woul be like with a DMK or better)
I had printed out these masks before but never got round to cutting them out or using them.
Obviously they work and take the guesing out of the erquation.
So...
is there a template for the 20''?

A venetian effect?, I have to admit I haven't heard of that one before, I must have missed that thread. I have to say I don't see the effect you describe, maybe its my monitor not showing it to me.
Do you mean lines parallel to the equator going across the disk? Can you point out some examples of this in other images, they might show up for me on my monitor.
One thing I did and never normally do is push the level1 enhancer way beyond what is normal in registax to see when the image would pixelate and try and get as much detail out of it. The main belts look abit grayed out because of that.
To be honest, the entire disk colour looks a little off to me now that I look at it again.
I'm really happy that the moon Ganymede came out good, it looks like a tiny disk and it looks like the right colour to me.
Whoever said planetary imaging was easy.

Yes the lines are parallel to the equator - can you explain them?
This reminded me of a comment Carl made in posting back in July.
www.irishastronomy.org/forum?func=view&catid=29&id=79910#79911
First time I've posted link to a posting elsewhere in the forum so if that didn't work its under the thread "Re:Jupiter 28th and 29th july"
However my memory has failed me slightly in that Carl was referring to the optimizer (and not the gain) causing a "venetion" effect(I thought Carl used the word "venetian" but he didn't) :-
"When imaging Jupiter your camera settings should be around 60percent GAIN and less on the shutter speed. Why you might say? if you don't use high Gain your image will be all grainy when you are finished processing it in registax. When processing your image DON'T use the optimizer because you will have vertical lines running through it."
I have no experience of the effect nor able to link to examples - but if Carl says its the case I tend to believe it can happen.
Is this the same thing or does your lines have a different cause?
Just curious - Its still a fine and detailed image.
Mark

ah-ha!, I see it now, I'm sitting back about 2-3 feet from the monitor and only saw it when I got real close to the monitor or use cntrl+ to zoom in on the browser.
To be honest I dont know where its coming from, I'll go back and redo my steps and see when its introduced. Now thats interesting stuff!

Hi Mike,
May thanks for pointing those lines out, I did a quick re run of the avi with similar settings except I didnt run optimiser, I skipped it completely. Thats a super tip, thanks for making me aware of it.
farm3.static.flickr.com/2591/3977802378_b1a5228186_o.jpg
this time I made the image a little les red, I think it looks a whole lot better.
Looks like running optimiser does indeed create these tv screen type lines in the image.
Now the image looks just a little pixelated
anyway, as for the mask, I'm contemplating making one up for the 20".

OMG.
I have been struggling with these 'lines' for years...
I never knew what the hell was causing them.
I do remember someone else mentioning it (aside from Carl O)
and saying that they became more obvious when the image was ran through Registax.
I always have the gain up very high and shutter etc.. at extremes.
Fair play for pointing this out on Daves shot.
It'll help hugely in the future.
Great stuff lads!!!!
