Hi all,
My friend's father had his ETX70 stolen in a burglary recently and my friend is thinking of getting him a new scope for xmas. The recipient has reasonable skies and would be an occasional observer. I was thinking a 6" dob would be a good idea, any idea of cost for one and would it be reasonably portable for one person? Any other ideas re a scope in a £500 or less budget? What about a TAL - used to have one myself - solid build, good scope.
Thanks
Neill

Hi Neill
With that budget, your friend could buy an 8" Skywatcher Dobsonian at First Light Optics and still have plenty left for a nice Hyperion 17mm. 6" dobs are really only for beginners, but an 8" will be a real "wow" after using an ETX70. It's very easy to carry and handle, and if you buy it under your name, you will be able to claim a 10% discount. When you phone, just tell them you are a member of the NIAAS and have more than 10 posts on the forum. You can get it delivered to your friend's house.
