Orion Focuser Adapters was created by mlkcampion
Hi
Just got my adapter from Orion (UK) which will allow me to connect my Canon350D. I had a T-Adapter just needed the T-Thread. On purchasing for some reason i had to go for a set of adapters that would also allow eyepiece projection photography (anybody actually do this???). I didn't mind this, mmight try my hand at it sometime. I wasn't even sure how it would attach to the Orion drawtube, and infact when i tried it i got it wrong first. What i attempted to do was unscrew the eyepiece clamp (compression ring) assembly from the drawtube and take what i thought was the T-thread and screw one side of this into the draw tube,(this is how it worked on my previous scope) pretty quickly realised this was not how it worked!!!

Anyhow it turned out that the assembly of parts i had purchased had a thread with a 1 1/4" barrel, this was the T-Thread. This thread is screwed into the T-Adapter, the T-Adapter connects to the Canon, and then you push the whole thing into the 1 1/4" compression ring as you do with any eyepiece.

This is where my problems begin, before i even tested i had a bad feeling about how secure a setup this was, i figured there was no way i wanted to depend on a compression ring to hold my camera. (let alone flexure e.t.c). I tested it today, it only takes a slight wiggle and the camera is ready to hit the deck no matter how tight i make the compression ring. Before i go on, note the number of parts on the drawtube before getting to the camera. 2" barrel extension tube (held by a compression ring), 2" to 1 1/4" adapter (held by compression ring), then the above mentioned assembly and camera held by compression ring. (I am not complaining about the rest of the adapters, in fact they are nice and solid, including the focuser. Just the overall method of connecting my canon to a compression ring)

What i would like to do is remove as much of these components as possible and go right to the drawtube and remove the first 2" compression ring, screw a barrel into to this that will be long enough (or short to let the camera get to focus). At the other end of this have a thread that will take the T-Thread. All i would have to do is screw in the T-Adapter and connect the camera which would make the setup much more secure and easier to manage.

Question is :-) has anyone had a similar scenario, or is there a better solution to this? Does anyone use a compression ring to hold their more expensive cameras?

I have contacted orion about this just waiting to see what they have, the website doesn't show much else though, so i just want to throw it out there just in case.

Thanks for replies
Mike
