Poot! Sure its only equivilent to 13,611 C14's put together. Hardly worth the effort really ;)

Seriously though can you imagine the planned instrumentation. Space telescopes are seriously hampered by getting the instrumentation up there and then maintaining it afterwards. No such problems here.

As they say in the ad. 'This is gonna be great'.

Saw this in the news. Its pretty incredible stuff. That thing is going to be the mother of all telescopes.

This news is most welcome. But i also believe we have learned so much from the Hubble telescope that the future of very large telescopes should be in space. I think the ultimate would be a 50 meter or a 100 meter space telescope. The James Webb will be a good start at 6.5 meters, due to go up in 2014.

But hay, this new scope is being funded and built, so lets count our blessings! :)

Cerro Armazones is just few clicks from Cerro Paranal. It can get very windy there, hopefully they know howto handle it.

The estimated cost is in the region of a billion euros.
