Ya. He go's out there to do his work.Hmmm... I know the likes of Damien Peach has (had?) a C14 for such work. It would be a pretty mean setup alright but you really do need very good seeing to make it work (I think Damien spent many a while in Barbados or somewhere like it).
Having said that (and after talking to him about it)
I'd be quite happy to pack that sucker up and ship it out to the Canaries
rent a jeep and head up to Tiede for a weeks imaging.
(not a split holiday - come - bit of observing)
I mean a week long expidition to do only astronomy.
I've been kicking this idea around on FB for a while now and
in fact there are a few people interested.. mainly astrophotographers.
I've a few contacts in the Canaries that I made from a visit there a few years back
to one of the observatories.
Decent bunch of nuts like ourselves.
If and when we ever sell our house in the new place I'll be
building an observatory of some sort.

So you won't fund mine then? Bummer.
BTW - is that La Palma you're talking about? Or are the Canaries somewhere else? My geography is as good as my knowledge of the 99 Messier objects...

I was tossing this idea around in my head before the summer. I was thinking of finding some out of the way place in Malta and driving down with a boot load of astro kit. Unfortunately the finances didn't stretch this year, but maybe next year....
Clear skies

There is even a hotel there:

SAC are planning a trip out there sometime.

I was within a whisker of meeting up with a group of astronomers (mainly German) for a weeks observing there back in March.
A 20inch dob can be rented from the hotel via a guy I was in contact with.
However, the hotel wasn't too cheap at the time and the whole thing was getting a bit expensive.
Alas, I had to pull out.

I've rang them and they are willing to drop the price for
a fixed number.
Dates kicked around include the Geminids in Dec.
I'll post here on the IFAS boards if they come back with anything solid
as I reckon it'd be a great opportunity for people to get to a really
excellent location.
Pity you missed it...
I'd be kicking myself.
Time I was out there it was clear all week then the
night at the obs it clouded out.
Ugh.
typical.
