Bearing laminate for dob build? was created by TrevorDurity
Hi all,
One of the lads in the local club has a wonky eq mount, not to mention no space for the mount + tripod & wants a short setup time and better transportability. So I've started to build a dob mount for him. Modelling this very much on the lightbridge mount.
I have all everything I need, wood, teflon, etc. But have no Ebony Star laminate left over from the big dob. I'd prefer not to have to get this shipped in Germany. It's always a pain to get that stuff sent in.
So just wondering, has anyone come across another suitable material that can be sourced in Ireland? The scope is 6" f8 solid tube Skywatcher so ebony star may be a bit of overkill anyway?
Any suggestion much appreciated.
Many thanks,
Trevor

Trevor,
I have always found any textured "Formica" perfect. As long as it has a bumpy finish (i.e. is not the flat, gloss finish type, which causes sticktion) Any builder's providers of hardware shop that sell kitchen worktops will have some. Every length of worktop is supplied with a lose length of edging strip. I have found the granite effect type to be good. (Also, if you know any kitchen installer the off-cut from the sink cutout makes a great base material.)
Michael.

Many thanks Michael. Good suggestion. Will have a look in one of the local hardware stores.
Cheers,
Trevor
