I would reccomend this set up; Manfrotto tripod, Manfrotto 410 geared head, and Manfrotto ball head for Camera + lens shots or camera + Apo shots.

I have tried other cheaper or less robust items (tripod / geared head / ball head) and
Wasted money & time only to end up getting the above.

If you are going to add auto guider scopes I'd seriously reccomend ringing Richard in AT.
He's a sound bloke and really helpfull (and not a 'salesman')

(I don't work for AT Btw!

But again I stress. Without a tripod/geared head & ball head the AT will be useless.

THanks Frank, that looks nice but 769 sterling plus vat would be a massive budget bust for me

Even on the setup Frank suggested I would say the tripod is the weakest link, I have and use the Manfrotto 055XPROB for photography and I would say its still not the best for the likes of this.

When you are choosing a tripod you have to consider 'Cost/Weight/Stability' but you can ONLY pick 2!

So if you are looking for Stability you can either buy a heavy cheap tripod or a light expensive one!

If you are only looking for a tripod for the AT then maybe have a look at their pier...and it all folds into itself which looks pretty cool! ' www.astrotrac.com/Default.aspx?p=pier '

yes was looking at the pier, Im not sure how heavy it is. and with a wedge im would be suprised it its all that mobile?

If it came in cheaper then the 1000 the package on AT, i think it would be a more stable set up.

the Losmandy Starlapse, looks to be much more expensive, i worked out about 1400 euros for the set up.

Perhaps have a google for some astrotrac photos you would like to emulate and send off an email to see what their system is and if they recommend it or if they wish they had of chosen something different at the get-go.

It looks like the pier is only a kilo and it all folds into itself to include the astrotrac and the lot can be popped into a shoulder bag.
